Aaron Dimmock, a retired Navy officer and aviator, has entered the Republican primary to challenge Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida — jumping into the race hours before a filing deadline last Friday. The primary for the First Congressional District, which covers Pensacola and the western Florida Panhandle, will take place on Aug. 20. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is allowing West Point to continue taking race into account in admissions, while a lawsuit over its policies continues. The justices on Friday rejected an emergency appeal seeking to force a change in the admissions process at West Point. Washington CNN —The Supreme Court said Friday that the United States Military Academy at West Point can continue considering race as a factor in its admissions process while a legal challenge to the practice plays out. Last week, SFFA asked the high court to step in on an emergency basis to block West Point from considering race in its admissions process as the litigation unfolds. “For now, the only question is what should happen as this case proceeds – who should bear the burden of the status quo,” attorneys for SFFA told the Supreme Court. “Every year this case languishes in discovery, trial, or appeals, West Point will label and sort thousands more applicants based on their skin color – including the class of 2028, which West Point will start choosing in earnest once the application deadline closes on January 31. Or should West Point bear the burden of temporarily complying with the Constitution’s command of racial equality?” they added in part.

Ticket purchases to football games in the name of a suspended Michigan football staffer who is the focus of an NCAA investigation into an alleged sign-stealing scheme have been found by multiple Big Ten teams. The Associated Press confirmed through officials at three Big Ten schools that they had found electronic purchases of game tickets in Stalions' name. One school found ticket purchases under Stalions' name to at least four of its home games over the past two years, one of the people said. A third school found a purchase under Stalions' name to a game two weeks before its team played Michigan last season, another person said. On Thursday, Michigan disclosed that its No. 2-ranked football team is under investigation by the National Collegiate Athletic Association for allegedly stealing the play-signal signs of their opponents. The details of what Michigan allegedly did haven’t been disclosed by the university or the NCAA. On Friday afternoon, Michigan suspended with pay one of its football analysts, Connor Stalions, pending the result of the outcome of the NCAA probe. Stalions is a United States Naval Academy graduate hired by Michigan full-time in May 2022 after serving as a volunteer coach there since 2015.

American Frank Rubio set a record for the longest U.S. spaceflight — a result of the extended stay. CNN —Ukraine’s military has said it is “clarifying” information received about the alleged assassination of Russian commander Viktor Sokolov, after Moscow released a video that appears to show him alive and well. Kyiv claimed on Monday it killed Sokolov, the commander of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, in an attack on the fleet’s headquarters in occupied Crimea last Friday. The nametape on his uniform reads Sokolov V. N. and his screen shows the Cyrillic letters “ЧФ,” the abbreviation for the Black Sea Fleet. “Available sources claim that the Black Sea Fleet Commander is among the dead. Russia appointed Sokolov as its new commander for its Crimea-based Black Sea fleet in August 2022, according to reports from state media outlet TASS at the time.
